I found a horse and a gun in San Francisco…

Yes, it’s been a bit quite. That’s because I and family were out West. We decided to go west after hearing about the recent discovery of gold!

Oh wait, not quite the story…

I had a work related conference in San Francisco and my family came along for the ride. Enjoyed a number of activities (including playing “brain pong”) and museums, rode the historic trolley, saw the giant redwoods, and much much more…

However, one event was of particular interest to this blog.  A carousel ride. Wait…you’re asking yourself “How in the world could a carousel ride relate to the N.U.G.U.N. Blog?”

My wife hopped on a horse and I sat down on the horse next to her. Low and behold I soon found myself on my trusty steed packing a six-shooter. (Come on, use a little imagination folks.)  It turned out that carved onto the side of my carousel horse was in fact a holster revolver.

Carousel and Side Arm

Definitely a unique experience. The carousel was built in 1906.  You know they would never include such artwork in a modern day ride.  Although I didn’t see any other horses bearing sidearms. I did find some photos indicating at least one other horse bearing a sidearm.

Here are more photos showing at least two horses with sidearms

The ever changing world of arms…

The Future of Firearms:

A long time ago, on a sea far far away the swashbuckling pirates stormed the merchant vessel wielding their large sharp sabers….

Many many years later another merchantman fended off a pirate vessel thru a pre-preemptive attack of arrows and crossbow bolts.

Centuries two naval vessels engaged one another. Their brass cannons firing large iron balls at one as the two ships crashed into one another; their men boarded wielding sword and firing muskets.

***

I could go on all the way to modern rifles, etc. The truth is “arms” are always evolving. The Constitution declares a right to bear arms. We usually hear the 2nd Amendment rights activists tout their right to carry a firearm. However, other aspects of this right are often neglected. It was common practice to carry a sword, saber or a dagger centuries ago. Yet even with a Pennsylvania license to carry firearm – I am still forbidden from walking around with one of my swords. Why is that?

Surely, my .45 ACP handgun is far deadlier than my sword. Why do we second amendment activists focus on the narrow view of arms to be firearms?

***

Okay, you may think I am just stirring up the pot for stirring sake. But I’m not. I am a visionary, I find that I can see the future that many are unable to see. “Arms” are evolving, and though it may be another 100-200 yrs until the next major evolution. We must be careful that we do not turn our Second Amendment right into a limitation.

I just read about a new weapon system. While it’s a tad big to be my new carry (perhaps it’ll be my vehicle gun). It’s showing how much progress is being made. This new “arm” is a combat laser system. But unlike previous laser weapon systems, this one does NOT need to be mounted on a Jumbo 747 or naval ship. While it’s still very bulky and unlikely to be on anything less than a Humvee.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/14/weaponised_rayguns_hit_shelves_in_time_for_xmas/

One must remember that we are witnessing the infancy of a new weapons platform. You would not the comparison of “blunderbuss” to an AR-15 fair would you? What about to an .380 LCP?

In another 40-80 yrs, such systems may be portable enough to be carry weapons.  What happens if all of the legislation we’ve fought to enact in defense of our 2nd Amendment is focused solely on firearms?  We may find ourselves only able to walk around with antique 9mm.  Stuck in the middle of history unable to wield older arms such as swords and crossbows and likewise forbidden from carrying the new top of the line carry blasters.

So while this post is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Remember, when you’re advocating your second amendment rights. To be careful how any legislation is worded. And don’t dismiss the banning of other arms like swords, crossbows, and knives.

N.U.G.U.N. Blog Launches iPhone Edition

As of today you’ll notice a new iPhone icon in the right side panel. This will bring you to an iPhone edition of the N.U.G.U.N. Blog – it’s not fancy. It’s a reduced media version. But it’s formatted nicely for the iPhone and quite speedy – courtesy of Intersquash.

There is another alternative if you can use WordPress plug-ins called WPTouch, but not sure if I can do that with the hosted version of WordPress.

PS – If anyone figures out how to implement the “WPTouch” version on a hosted wordpress.com blog. Please let me know – thanks!

Off-Topic: AR-15 versus the latest modular shooting system…

The AR is lauded for being a feature rich modular shooting system with a large range of adaptibility.  It’s probably considered by many to be the forefront of modular shooting…until now!!!

Negligent Discharges

A lot of chatter in the blog community over a negligent discharge at SayUncle’s blog.

A couple of things to note.

1. No one was hurt because the rules were not violated. The gun was pointed in a safe direction.

2. Say Uncle lays a valid criticism toward the design of the firearm.

3. I believe this ND could still have been avoided by

a) During a recent safety course I took, our instructor advise that easing the hammer down could be unsafe. And that the only reliable way to do so was to place the web of your hand in the way as you ease down. Providing a barrier until the trigger is reset.

b) Using an empty magazine.  Which has prompted me that maybe manufacturer’s should consider the inclusion of a standardized (ie: blue or orange colored) dummy magazine that cannot take rounds. Specifically for such type of roles.

Free Shot Timer for the iPhone (courtesy of SureFire

When taking the NRA Basic Pistol and Home Defense courses, my instructor brought in a strange gadget which was designed to measure and record your shots fired, splits in time, etc.

He explained it’s usefulness as a training tool. I express interest as a developer and an iPhone user about the prospect of just such an app for the iPhone. Well courtesy of The Firearm Blog I’ve recently been made aware that Surefire has released a Shot Timer application for the iPhone.

Best of all Surefire’s “ShotTimer” application is FREE!!!

Just go to iTunes and type “ShotTimer”

Help me identify this rifle for a friend…

The rifle is a bolt action with a smooth bolt lever (no knob on the end). The stock is a “Fajen” with a pommel on the bottom. I’m assuming this is an after-market stock.  We were told that it was Swedish, but that is unconfirmed.

If you think you might know what type of rifle this is. And what type of replacement stock is needed. Please email me at:  nugun@easternstorm.net

Obama’s Official Proposed Agenda: Courtesy of “Change.gov”

  • As president, Barack Obama will support innovative local programs, such as the CeaseFire program in Chicago [My thoughts: I have no problem with programs designed to reduce gang activity and violence. So long as they don't expand to infringe upon citizen's rights to protect themselves. Such infringements do little to stop  violence.]
  • As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. [My Thoughts: I am less knowledgeable on this issue than I care to be. (So please feel free to chime in on this if you've got a greater understanding.) I think there would be a benefit to local access, except for the fact that local police forces have a tendency to mis-use such information access.  Deleware refused an 80 yr old woman from purchasing a .22 revolver because she was old and a woman. This decision was made based on accessing information which was not even supposed to exist. In a perfect world I'd be all for this, but in a perfect world we wouldn't need this. I fear it's misuse.]
  • They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. [My Thoughts: The so-called gun show loophole is what is termed a "private sale". I can sell a friend my old hunting rifle without needing to pay a dealer a large fee for a transer.I've attended a number of gun shows. While some people have rifle or two on their back with a for sale sign.  I have not seen any tables loaded with rifles and signs saying "NO BACKGROUND CHECK NEEDED".  Most of the time the guys are trying to trade in the guns toward a new purchase. I think a much better solution would be to make a national 1-800 number for private sales that would allow an individual to run a PICS background check for free.  Or maybe make it a 1-900 call that costs $2 to cover the costs. ]
  • They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets. [My Thoughts: Ironically, 98% of the rifles that will be restricted by the AWB are not battlefield rifles. They would have been great in World War II. But if you were to going into a modern battlefield with these rifles - you'd be seriously outgunned.  These are mostly semi-automatic, one pull of the trigger, one bullet - would you want to face someone on the battlefield with such a weapon when your opponent is equipped with a fully automatic machine pistol or assault rifle capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute? I sure wouldn't....]
