2 Florida Deputies Killed

Condolences to the families..

The two deputies went to arrest a one Joshua Cartwright after his wife showed up at the local hospital with bruises from domestic battery.

What seems bizarre is that they tried to pick him up when he was at a rifle range. Seems like a VERY dangerous place to pick someone up. He also had a prior domestic abuse charge in November. Trial was still pending. Not sure if that makes one ineligible to own firearms under Florida law.

While one wolf is down, we are saddened that we had to lose two sheep dogs in the process.

Arlen Specter shows true colors at last…(switches to Democrat Party)

A lot of conservatives have been frustrated with Senator Arlen Specter.  Now, with his support in the Republican Party faltering, often refered to as a RINO,  and an upcoming primary race he was expected to lose – what is the Senator to do?

Switch parties and become a Democrat of course!
(RINO no more…)

.380 to the head…50/50 chance for one family

A woman with a restraining order out on her husband finds, as have many women, that it was quite ineffective at protecting her. Apparently, God was a bit more effective…

Her husband came in and shot her point blank in the head with a .380 caliber pistol. He than proceeded to go outside and shoot himself.  The result, apparently this family only has a 50/50 chance of dying from a .380 gun shot wound.

While the husband was successful in killing himself. He failed in his attempt to kill his wife. The bullet hit her in the head, passed through her skull, through the lobe areas and out the back of her skull.  But did not kill her. Dazed and confused she made herself some tea and offered some to the police officer when he arrived.

H/T to Snowflakes

D.C. Residents Criminalized for Parking in their Driveways

Snowflakes details a situation in Washington D.C. where residents have been ticketed and fined for parking in their own driveways. Essentially, this comes down to a stupid city ordinance designed to allow the city to own your sidewalks as public property but make you liable and responsible for maintenance and any injuries.  Many cities have such laws. In  DC’s case, the wording essentially makes anything from your building forward such designation.  So people who have parked their cars in their own driveways, but not pulled up far enough (and we’re not talking about hang over into the sidewalk), are finding themselves ticketed.

http://www.wtop.com/?sid=1659296&nid=695

Why am I re-posting this clearly non-gun related issue? Is it just to rag on the city of D.C., famed for it’s anti-gun stance.

No…it’s to point out a belief I have long held. I believe the intention of our legal system under this government has been to formulate a legal foundation for which you can make any citizen a criminal.

No matter how much of a good citizen you try to be. There is a law out there that were the government to choose to do so, they could prosecute you on it.  And even such a minor thing as a ticket for parking in your own driveway can quickly become a more serious crime. Were you to miss a related court date, regardless of whether the courts sent you the wrong date (see Ruby Ridge).

It is also why I have little to no respect for our legal system. I do not consider it to be a system of justice. But a system of laws, mostly written by people for which I have the greatest distain. Our legal system has been separated from the people.  No longer are our laws accessible to the common farmer.

Thankfully, I seldom find myself in conflict with the legal system thanks to the fact that my personal moral code tends to exceed that of the legal system.

But it is a warning to us gun owners that we must be on our toes, to make sure that we don’t find ourselves caught up in some minute technicality of the law. And that we are ever vigilant to watch what legislation our elected officials are passing. To make sure that seemingly innoculous legislation does not contain traps and snares.

Dry-fire and Home Defense

Range practice is becoming difficult. Even with ammo prices skyrocketing and the mere absence of common calibers on the store shelves may preclude your range practice as well - even if you’re a pro-gun billionaire who can afford the high prices,

One common training methodology is dry-firing. I have been trying to implement this in my training more. Along with learning my home and it’s potential defenses.

Dryfire is the practice of performing a technique (be it aiming, drawing, reloads, etc) with anunloaded firearm.   The repetition helps to build muscle memory &  improve your technique.  It is highly recommended by experts for those who are wanting to practice and improve their skills as a shooter.

Always, always, check your firearm. Make sure it is unloaded. Then if you are able, place your ammo in a seperate location from where you practice OR lock it up.  This way there is little chance of confusion.

Here are some photos that I took. They are staged as I was using an automated timer on my camera to take the pictures in order to avoid pointing the firearm at anything I do not want to destroy (like a photographer).   But I did the actions so as to imitate the dry-firing I had been practicing involving drawing and re-holstering.

http://www.nugun.org/photos/nugun_2009_04_bedroom/

  1.  I would grip the sidearm with strong hand and simultaneously place my weak hand to my chest.

  2.  Draw the sidearm from the holster and rotate 90 degrees to be pointing toward the target.
(This is in fact the first position in which one becomes able to fire the gun on target.)

  3. Move sidearm toward my center and bring my weak hand onto it in order to secure a strong two handed grip.  (This too is a shootable position.)

  4. Extend arms to preferred shooting position, while keeping sights level and trained on target.

2nd Amendment Rally – Part IV: “Fobus” (review)

I had debated using my Fobus holster for this event. While much more accessible than my cheap nylon IWB holster. It stands out a lot more as well.

However, since I was contemplating open carrying. I figured the Fobus and my large overshirt would allow me to do both.  I was still hesitant, as I had an incident with my Fobus the other day. I was planning to give it a try as a carry holster. I went from sitting down in my house, to sitting in my car, then back into the house when I realized I had forgotten something.  The holster had slipped 45 degrees in angle – NOT GOOD!

Today I decided to give it a second chance and to make sure it was really secure beforehand.

The good news…no slippage!

The bad news…my fear about concealment was proved valid.  When returning to the parking lot after the rally. I was spotted by the valet. Granted, it was a second amendment rally with lots of people OC.  So he was pretty much looking for it.

“You got a nine!” he said. To which I politely replied “No I don’t”. He looked at me questionatively, “You did just come from the second amendment rally right…and I can see the bulge on your side.” inkling to prove he was right.  To which I calmly and light heartedly replied “Yes I was at the rally. But it’s not a nine.”  To which everyone, myself, the valet and another bystander from the rally laughed.  I did take the opportunity to share a bit about what we were doing and why. About the dangers of gun control, it’s roots in racism and prejudice, etc.  So at least I turned it to a positive.

But that pretty much confirmed my concerns regarding utilization of the Fobus for CCW purposes. It’s just not a workable option for me.

I really like the accessibility it provides over the IWB. But the reduced concealibility is a major issue.
