Pistol Packing Preachers

Pastor is another term for a shepherd.  Shepherds do a couple of things, with the two most important being “feeding” the sheep and keeping the sheep “safe”.

The following is an article discussing a number of Detroit pastors who are doing both.

“Many people are uncomfortable with the idea of an armed clergy, because Christ preached against violence and taught people they should love their enemies.”

Christ at one point also instructed his disciples to buy a sword if they did not have one.  “Apostle Johnny get your gun!”  And while Christ did preach to love your enemies.  He did not ever oppose self-defense. Sadly, many misinterpret the following passage as an admonition against self-defense.

Matthew  5:39 “But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

The reference to being struck on the cheek was not one of being attacked by a mugger or other predator but was a reference to being insulted.  Just picture the stereotypical scene of the Frenchman removing his glove and slapping the face of the man before him.  There is no real threat of harm or death in that situation, merely insult and injury to ego.  For this one is admonished to turn the other cheek. Christ never suggested we should sit passively and let an evil person kill our wife and children.

The pastors are doing what needs to be done in the age and area they live in.

Lastly, may I remind all pastors and teachers that they are under a curse.  A burden to rightfully teach the word of God – and NOT to teach their culture.

“Can you in your wildest imagination ever see Jesus packing a .38? I can’t imagine Peter and Paul carrying .45s.””

Luke 22:36 “Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

Or to modernize that passage…

“But now, he who has a wallet, let him take it, and likewise a backpack; and he who has no gun, let him sell his garment and buy a Glock.”

To answer the question of What Would Jesus Do? Was Christ totally opposed to the use of force?  Would Jesus have advocated the use of force against criminals and predators?  I’ll let you decide…

John 2:14-15 “And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.”

At a minimum, this is pretty de facto evidence for the use of non-lethal force.
